SpaceX Deploys 21 Defense Communications Network Satellites

Latest Falcon 9 launch supports Space Development Agency’s growing low-Earth orbit constellation.

SpaceX recently 21 satellites for the U.S. Space Development Agency (SDA) from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California this month. The Falcon 9 rocket lifted the satellites that are part of the SDA’s Tranche 1 Transport Layer, a network designed to improve global communications and provide secure, low-latency data connections for U.S. military operations.

“The Transport Layer will be a proliferated constellation of hundreds of space vehicles (SVs), in low-Earth orbit (LEO),” the agency said. “Additional Transport Layer SVs are deployed to add resilience and targeted technological enhancements.”

The constellation will eventually include 126 satellites in low-Earth orbit, equipped with high-speed optical and radio frequency links. The SDA plans to expand the system under Tranche 2, scheduled for fiscal year 2027, which will enhance existing capabilities and introduce new tactical communication technologies.
